SCCA SEDIV Time Trial at TGPR – “No Frills” but a GREAT Event!
SCCA Southeast Division Time Trial Program was short an event for their series this year. Craig Farr, Mark Rothermel and George Bugg worked with the TVR and Alabama Regions to put on an event at TGP Raceway in Munford, Alabama on short notice.
To make it financially feasible, they cut out all the extras… and called it the November 4-6 “No Frills” Time Trial and PDX.
Forty two drivers signed up and they enjoyed over two hours of track time on a great track on a beautiful weekend! A number of drivers were signed off for full Time Trial Licenses and 14 TGPR Time Trial Records were set. Nine PDX drivers enjoyed track time on both days. The only incident of the weekend was Ted Theodore’s Southern Driver Jedi throwing a rod and catching fire on back straight. Another engine and some fiberglass work and the car should be ready for spring. Thanks to all drivers, workers and stewards for a wonderful weekend.
The Southeast Division Time Trial drivers were able to honor one of our own at this event. After racing and winning a championship in Formula Fords at Hockenheim, Walt Wurzbach came back to the states, raced in many SCCA events and served in many capacities here in the Southeast Division of SCCA. He has won more championships in SEDIV Time Trial program than any other driver with a total of 14 wins (11 in Specials, 1 in Formula Atlantic and 2 in Formula Ford). Walt is in his seventies now and he has had some health problems but his wife, Ann (a solid racer, past SEDIV TT Formula Atlantic Champion and Chimney Rock Hillclimb veteran) has continued take great care of him. As a “thank you” to Walt, drivers arranged with SCCA stewards and Track Management to allow Walt to take a lap in a Formula Car on track with TJ Theodore leading him around in his CSP Miata. The course workers lined pit entrance and waved all color flags as Walt drove by and drivers lined the paddock to applaud him, his racing career and service. He was greeted at the end of his ride with a kiss from Annie. Walt handled the car beautifully and all participants were very pleased to have him, his wife and son at Talledega Gran Prix Raceway for the event. This was a proper thank you for one of our heroes.
